Founded by Karl Bergmann as a porcelain painter, who was later joined by his brother Michael. After a couple of years the company was renamed Gebrüder Bergmann. Karl unfortunately died, leaving a widow, Cäcilie. Michael traded as Gebrüder Bergmann for another nine years before changing the company name to Michael Bergmann. Elise Bergmann, probably the daughter of Karl and Cäcilie, first sold tobacco, then stationary supplies, and around 1941, also some beer steins from Hohenzollernstraße 158. She was the only surviving Bergmann, mentioned in the 1953 Munich address book, still at Hohenzollernstraße 158.  
First known date is 1901, where the company was listed at Schellingstraße 128

They moved then to Hohenzollernstraße 18c, and again in 1905 to Hohenzollernstraße 158 until at least 1919.
